A gentle guide to preparing your space for meaningful, relaxed newborn photos at home

Welcoming a new baby is such a tender, joy-filled season - and your newborn photo session should add to that joy, not add stress to your week. As a lifestyle newborn photographer, my in-home newborn sessions are designed to be relaxed, natural, and meaningful, capturing your family just as you are during these early days together.

Here are simple steps to help you prepare your home for a beautiful, stress-free newborn session, so you can focus on soaking in these moments with your baby.

1. Let the Natural Light In

Before I arrive, please open all curtains and blinds in the rooms we may use—often your bedroom, living room, or nursery. We’ll turn off all overhead lights and lamps to allow soft, natural light to fill your space, giving your photos a timeless, airy feel.

2. Don’t Worry About a Perfectly Tidy Home

Your home does not need to look perfect to capture beautiful images. Babies don’t notice dishes in the sink or baskets of laundry, and I don’t either! If there’s clutter in the spaces we’ll use, I’m more than happy to help move items quickly when I arrive so you don’t have to stress.

3. Focus on a Few Simple Spaces

If you want to do a quick tidy, just focus on:

• Your bed (neutrals are wonderful, but whatever you have is perfectly fine)

• The nursery crib area

• Your living room couch or a cozy window spot

Clearing nightstands and counters of extra items can help keep photos clean and timeless, but don’t feel like you need to deep clean your entire house.

4. Keep Baby Comfortable

For lifestyle newborn photos, it doesn’t matter if your baby is awake or asleep—we'll capture beautiful moments either way. The most important thing is that your baby is comfortable and fed before the session. A cozy swaddle, a simple onesie, or a special outfit you love are all perfect options. Choose something that feels comfortable for your baby and meaningful to you, and we will capture your family just as you are during this sweet season.

5. Warm Up Your Home

Babies love warmth, and a cozy space helps your baby stay comfortable during the session. A slightly warmer room temperature helps, especially if you’d like any swaddle-free or skin-to-skin moments.

6. Relax and Enjoy the Moment

The most beautiful images come from real moments of connection, not perfection. Snuggle your baby, laugh with your partner, and let siblings be themselves. I will gently guide you while allowing space for genuine moments to unfold naturally. My goal is for you to feel relaxed and present so we can capture the love your family shares during these early days.
