Everything you need to know before deciding where and how to capture your baby’s first days.

When you're expecting a baby (or just welcomed your little one!), choosing a newborn photographer is one of the first big decisions you’ll make to preserve this fleeting season. One of the most common questions parents ask is: Should we do an in-home session or go to a studio?

As an Indiana newborn photographer who specializes only in in-home lifestyle sessions, I’m here to walk you through the differences, the benefits of each, and how to decide what feels right for your family.

What Is In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Photography?

In-home lifestyle sessions are all about capturing your baby in the comfort of your own space. There’s no posing baby in baskets or overly staged setups - just the natural, cozy moments that unfold in your home as you snuggle, feed, rock, and love on your newborn. I’ll gently guide you into flattering, natural light and sweet connection, but the goal is authenticity over perfection.

These sessions often include the whole family - parents, siblings, and even pets - documenting your new life together in a way that feels meaningful and real.

What Is Studio Newborn Photography?

Studio newborn sessions are typically more posed and stylized. Think curled-up babies in baskets, wraps, or themed props, often in a temperature-controlled environment with studio lighting. These sessions usually take place within the first two weeks after birth and may focus more on the baby alone rather than family interaction.

Posed studio work requires babies to be deeply asleep for safety and positioning, and sessions can last several hours with lots of time for feeding and soothing.

Pros of In-home Sessions:

You don’t have to leave the house.

No packing the diaper bag, no loading everyone into the car. Just relax in your own space.

The focus is on connection.

These sessions highlight the emotional, unscripted moments between your family and your baby.

Every detail is personal.

Your baby’s nursery, that cozy blanket Grandma made, your pup curled up on the bed - these are the things that make your story yours.

Perfect for siblings and pets.

Kids feel more relaxed at home, and including furry family members is easy.

Pros of Studio Newborn Sessions:

Stylized, posed images.

If you’re drawn to that curled-up, sleepy look with props and backdrops, a studio is designed for that.

Controlled environment.

The lighting, temperature, and setup are tailored to get just the right image.

Minimal home prep.

You don’t have to worry about tidying up or making your house photo-ready.

Which One Is Right for You?

It all comes down to what kind of memories you want to hold onto.

If you’re dreaming of natural, emotional images that document this new chapter in a way that’s relaxed and deeply personal, an in-home lifestyle session may be the perfect fit.

If you're envisioning more posed, polished portraits with props and styled setups, you might prefer a studio session.

There’s no wrong choice - just what feels right for your family.

Why I Only Offer In-Home Sessions as an Indiana Newborn Photographer

There’s something incredibly beautiful about photographing families where they’re most comfortable - at home. Babies don’t need props to be precious. Your love, your home, your story... that’s more than enough. It’s an honor to step into that space and preserve these early days in a way that feels timeless and true to who you are.

If you’re looking for a relaxed, meaningful way to document your baby’s first days, I’d love to be your Indiana newborn photographer.
